  • Bichon Frise is The Top Dog – Really!

Bichon Frise puppies are perky, playful, and downright gorgeous. There’s no getting around their beauty.

It’s just one of the reasons a Bichon Frise named Flynn was picked and earned the best in show title for 2018 at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show! That’s right, a Bichon Frise prevailed as American’s top dog, pleasantly surprising many in the audience. The competition was fierce, but as we mentioned, the looks of a Bichon was just one of the reasons Flynn won. There’s more than meets the eye with them. The trainability and tricks displayed beat out the competition. Are you interested in getting one of these prize-winning furry babies? Check out our available puppies page and continue reading below for some pointers on how to keep your Bichon Frise in pristine condition!

    Caring for Your Bichon

They don’t just wake up looking all pretty and fancy. Their fluffy and show-stopping white coats require maintenance, which includes regular brushing and combing. They will need to be trimmed at least twice a month because their hair grows pretty quickly. And since the Bichon Frise doesn’t shed any loose hair, it is easy for their hair to become matted or tangled; therefore we suggest professional grooming.

    Training Your Bichon

Bichons are very intelligent, but they require a firm hand when training. Never yell at your Bichon Frise, because it’s harsh and won’t ever yield the responses you want. We always suggest positive reinforcement when training new puppies. Give your pup treats to do exactly what you want! We aren’t professing that you’ll have the skills of Flynn the best in show winner, but it’ll be fun trying!

  • 4 Training Tips for Your Rottweiler

Rottweilers are big beauties who command a presence, and we know exactly! Besides their looks, they’re smarty pants, but they need a little encouragement from their owners in order for them to reach their full potential!

If you want to know how to train your Rottweiler, then you’re in the right place. We have 4 neat tips for you. Well, we have 4 and a half, because we have to start by imploring you to have patience, patience, and more patience! Okay, now let’s get to it.

    Step One: Start Young

We have always recommended that training your Rottweiler, or any dog for that matter, at a young age is best. You will have the most success and yield the best results if you train your Rotty between the ages of 6 weeks and 6 months. If your Rottweiler is older, don’t worry. It may take a little more time and, ahem – patience, on your part. Don’t be discouraged because they are innately intelligent and obedient. Institute positive reinforcement training always.

    Step Two: Understand Dominance Training

What’s dominance training? It’s the idea of constantly establishing rules that your Rottweiler will follow, to eventually improve his behavior. Dominance training is not meant to exert dominance over your dog. No! Never show aggression towards your dog and always be kind and careful.

    Step Three: Socialize Your Rotty

It is imperative to make sure your Rottweiler is comfortable around other people as well as other dogs.  This can be accomplished by taking your puppy for walks, or going to a park, or over a friend’s houses, and also by inviting guests to your home to visit. These tips are ways to get your puppy to be happy and comfortable around other people and pets. Having a well-socialized dog is critical to training him. It’s also nice to be able to take your dog for a walk and not have any confrontations or issues.

    Step Four: Utilizing Positive Reinforcement

We mentioned this briefly in another tip, but this one is more detailed. Positive reinforcement is a type of training that gives your dog rewards consequential to his actions. Training by reward is the best possible way that you can communicate with your Rotty. By rewarding him with treats, toys, and praise, you’re relating to him your appreciation, and he’s doing the same.

A very effective form of dog training involves creating mini training sessions that are set up like a game. When you are trying to teach your Rottweiler a command, and they perform the command to your liking, immediately give them their reward. Be mindful of the type and amount of treats you give your Rotty, because they are notorious for being overweight.

These 4 tips will get you started on the right path to training and obedient yet playful dog!

The AKC first recognized the Dachshund breed in 1885, and they were originally only black and tan and one size. That was then, and this is now! In addition to the various colors, they have two accepted sizes which are standard and miniature, and their coats can be smooth, long or wire-haired. Their personalities remain the same, so you have so many options to choose!

    Their “Hot Dog” Bodies

There’s no doubt that Dachshund puppies have one of the most unique shapes. Their long little bodies make them one of the most recognized breeds out there. • We’ve Got Precious Maltipoo Puppies

Maltipoo puppies are a new designer dog that beautifully blends the Maltese and the Miniature Poodle.

They are gentle natured, and friendly dogs – not to mention they’re downright cute! Want to learn more? We’ve put together some helpful and interesting facts about Maltipoo puppies.

    Cuddly Coats

There are two important things worth mentioning about the beautiful coats of Maltipoo puppies.  Firstly, they don’t shed or produce as much dander and most dogs. Both the Maltese and Poodle share this trait, so it’s only logical that this dog would be as close as they come to be a hypoallergenic dog. Secondly, the Maltipoo puppies will require consistent, regular grooming and a great deal of maintenance. The Poodle’s coat is naturally curly, and the Maltese’s coat is naturally wavy.  Even though it’s pleasing to look at and play in their hair, this combination is rather difficult to maintain without professional grooming.

    Surprise!

This breed is surprising because you really don’t know what you’re going to get – besides a cute, loving ball of fun. There are some Maltipoo puppies that look mostly like a Maltese. There are some Maltipoo puppies that have really curly hair and resemble Poodles more than anything else. This all really depends on their parents. Their colors will vary as well, but their sizes will be about the same. Full grown Maltipoo puppies weigh anywhere between 5 and 15 pounds, with a lifespan of 12 years.

    Pleasant Puppies

As we’ve previously mentioned, the Maltipoo puppy is a crossbreed between the Maltese and Poodle, so trying to predict and standardize their personality and temperaments can be tricky.  Research has shown that, in general, they are friendly, loyal, and energetic dogs. Both the Maltese and Poodle generally display those characteristics, so responsible and reputable breeders have the opportunity to mix a delightful breed if done correctly.

  • Cool Facts about The Siberian Husky

Petland always has Siberian Husky puppies for sale, check them out on our available puppies page, by clicking here!

In the meantime, take a look at some interesting facts about this majestic breed.

What’s more striking about the Siberian Husky? Is it their big and fluffy coat or their piercing blue eyes?  Maybe it’s both!

Husky puppies have double coats which allow them to be warm in the winter. They have an undercoat that is short and keeps their bodies warm and insulated in cold climates. Their overcoat is very long and water-resistant, so when their romping and playing in the snow, it will fall off of them.

Those piercing blue eyes serve the cold too. Because of their almond shapes, it allows Huskie puppies to squint to keep out the cold, snow, and ice. They are still able to see, however!

Speaking of their blue eyes, this is not a result of a genetic malfunction as with other dogs with blue eyes. This is actually a physical trait unique to Siberian Huskies.

    They are natural born runners.

Siberian Husky puppies were born as a result of creating the ideal sled dog. It is said they were closely related to the original Chukchi dogs of Siberia. This eventual creation of Husky puppies resulted in a dog that can run hundreds of miles a day, while still being able to tolerate the harsh cold and maintain their energy and stamina. They can regulate their own metabolism. Somehow Huskies burn through calories and never experience fatigue.

These are just a few facts about Siberian Husky puppies, and there are tons more. If you’re interested in learning more, feel free to contact us today. You can also stop by our store and speak to one of our knowledgeable onsite pet counselors. They can help you decide if the Husky is a good fit for your family.
