  • 4 Training Tips for Your Rottweiler

Rottweilers are big beauties who command a presence, and we know exactly! Besides their looks, they’re smarty pants, but they need a little encouragement from their owners in order for them to reach their full potential!

If you want to know how to train your Rottweiler, then you’re in the right place. We have 4 neat tips for you. Well, we have 4 and a half, because we have to start by imploring you to have patience, patience, and more patience! Okay, now let’s get to it.

    Step One: Start Young

We have always recommended that training your Rottweiler, or any dog for that matter, at a young age is best. You will have the most success and yield the best results if you train your Rotty between the ages of 6 weeks and 6 months. If your Rottweiler is older, don’t worry. It may take a little more time and, ahem – patience, on your part. Don’t be discouraged because they are innately intelligent and obedient. Institute positive reinforcement training always.

    Step Two: Understand Dominance Training

What’s dominance training? It’s the idea of constantly establishing rules that your Rottweiler will follow, to eventually improve his behavior. Dominance training is not meant to exert dominance over your dog. No! Never show aggression towards your dog and always be kind and careful.

    Step Three: Socialize Your Rotty

It is imperative to make sure your Rottweiler is comfortable around other people as well as other dogs.  This can be accomplished by taking your puppy for walks, or going to a park, or over a friend’s houses, and also by inviting guests to your home to visit. These tips are ways to get your puppy to be happy and comfortable around other people and pets. Having a well-socialized dog is critical to training him. It’s also nice to be able to take your dog for a walk and not have any confrontations or issues.

    Step Four: Utilizing Positive Reinforcement

We mentioned this briefly in another tip, but this one is more detailed. Positive reinforcement is a type of training that gives your dog rewards consequential to his actions. Training by reward is the best possible way that you can communicate with your Rotty. By rewarding him with treats, toys, and praise, you’re relating to him your appreciation, and he’s doing the same.

A very effective form of dog training involves creating mini training sessions that are set up like a game. When you are trying to teach your Rottweiler a command, and they perform the command to your liking, immediately give them their reward. Be mindful of the type and amount of treats you give your Rotty, because they are notorious for being overweight.

These 4 tips will get you started on the right path to training and obedient yet playful dog!

  • Saint Bernard Puppies: The Gentle Giants

Saint Bernard puppies are gentle giants.

We know that sometimes large dogs get a bad rap, but these big beauties shouldn’t ever! They are extremely tender and tolerant. Put them in a family with kids and everyone will be pleased and happy to learn how well they get along. They are just too sweet and we love talking about them. Continue reading to learn even more, because they are one interesting breed!

    Plenty o’ Personality

Saint Bernards puppies and adult dogs are loving and placid. People unfamiliar with their generally sweet dispositions are taken aback by their size and sometimes approach (or not) in fear. In some ways, we understand because Saint Bernard puppies are naturally quick to protect family members who they believe are in danger. In most cases, they are overwhelmingly friendly. They are perfect for families with children because they are known to be patient, especially with little kids who can be a little rough. They are careful not to injure the child, as they’re aware of their size.

    Sharing Your Space

Saint Bernard puppies are social and they love being around family. Honestly, nothing makes them happier than participating in family activities. On the flip side, they will sulk and be sad if they’re left alone too much. In those cases, they can become a bit destructive, acting out of boredom. It’s imperative that they are trained as Saint Bernard puppies sooner than later. What you’ll learn, as they’re learning, is that they are quick studies.

    Big Dog – Big Diet

You want to make sure that your Saint Bernard puppies are eating a well-balanced and nutritional meal. Of course you want to feed your dog the proper amounts, but be careful not to overfeed them, as they’re prone to obesity. Excess weight can strain the joints and create or worsen any problems in your dog’s hips or elbows. Saints have a life expectancy of 8 to 10 years so a proper diet and healthy living conditions will keep your pup around happy and healthy!

  • Remarkable Dachshund Facts

We have previously talked about this fierce, quirky shaped, small dog and we’re doing it again!

    Dachshunds Galore

The AKC first recognized the Dachshund breed in 1885, and they were originally only black and tan and one size. That was then, and this is now! You can find the Dachshund in 12 standard colors and three different kinds of markings. In addition to the various colors, they have two accepted sizes which are standard and miniature, and their coats can be smooth, long or wire-haired. Their personalities remain the same, so you have so many options to choose!

    Their “Hot Dog” Bodies

There’s no doubt that Dachshund puppies have one of the most unique shapes. Their long little bodies make them one of the most recognized breeds out there. However, they weren’t bred to be marveled at for their cuteness. Over 300 years ago, they were bred to hunt badgers. Their name literally means “badger dog” in German. Their little legs and steadfast nature allowed them to enter badger dens and take on animals larger than they were in really small spaces.

    Dachshunds Are Respected

Did you know that Dachshunds are the 11th most popular breed in America? They have so many qualities that make them great pet companions. They are exceptional guard dogs who will quickly alert family members to possible intruders (or the occasional mailman). They may have little bodies, but they are well known for their athleticism.

In the meantime, take a look at some interesting facts about this majestic breed.

What’s more striking about the Siberian Husky? Is it their big and fluffy coat or their piercing blue eyes?  Maybe it’s both!

Husky puppies have double coats which allow them to be warm in the winter. They have an undercoat that is short and keeps their bodies warm and insulated in cold climates. Their overcoat is very long and water-resistant, so when their romping and playing in the snow, it will fall off of them.

Those piercing blue eyes serve the cold too. Because of their almond shapes, it allows Huskie puppies to squint to keep out the cold, snow, and ice. They are still able to see, however!

Speaking of their blue eyes, this is not a result of a genetic malfunction as with other dogs with blue eyes. This is actually a physical trait unique to Siberian Huskies.

    They are natural born runners.

Siberian Husky puppies were born as a result of creating the ideal sled dog. It is said they were closely related to the original Chukchi dogs of Siberia. This eventual creation of Husky puppies resulted in a dog that can run hundreds of miles a day, while still being able to tolerate the harsh cold and maintain their energy and stamina. They can regulate their own metabolism. Somehow Huskies burn through calories and never experience fatigue.

These are just a few facts about Siberian Husky puppies, and there are tons more. If you’re interested in learning more, feel free to contact us today. • Types of Rottweiler Dogs

We bet you thought you already knew about Rottweilers and assumed there was just one type.

Well, there are more than one. Let’s explore the world of Rottweiler puppies by delving into the various types of this powerful breed of dog that exists!

    German Rottweilers

The German Rottweiler comes from – you guessed it – Germany! They differ from American Rottweiler puppies because the Rottweiler Club of Germany selectively breeds them. German Rottweilers are bred to be working dogs, and this is a task that is taken very seriously in Germany. Germans only allow specific dogs to produce. Each dog is required to meet and pass a stringent physical, as well as a temperamental test, and there are stipulations before their owners can breed them. Because of this, German Rottweiler puppies typically exhibit consistent temperaments and personalities.

    American Rottweilers

These Rottweiler puppies are bred and born in the United States. Unlike the breeding in Germany, American Rottweilers are generally produced for their handsome and striking looks and not for working. American Rottweilers accepted by the American Kennel Club are considered to be purebred dogs.

    Roman Rottweilers

Roman Rottweilers are massive and developed through selective breeding, and they don’t have Roman roots. They resemble the size of a Mastiff dog, but their coat and other physical appearances are that of American or German Rottweilers. Unfortunately, because of their grand size, they are very prone to suffering from hip dysplasia, among other orthopedic concerns.

    Tailed Rottweilers

Many Rottweiler puppies are actually born with a tail, but they are docked shortly after that. The tailed Rottie is making a comeback, so to speak! They have been spotted more and more in recent years. In Germany, the practice of tail docking has been banned since 1999, however.

All Rottweilers have the same brown and black distinctive coats, and they possess large heads with alluring brown eyes! These are certain standards that will never change!

  • Interesting English Mastiff Info

The English Mastiff (nicknamed the Old English Mastiff) is one of those large dogs that are pretty distinguishable.

Even as puppies, you know them by their splendid colors and specifically their massive sized heads and bodies! Large dogs, in general, are pretty intimidating but these babies are gentle and sweet by nature. Want to learn more about these big beauties? Continue reading because we’ve gathered some dynamic information about them.

Guess what. They don’t require daily exercise!

Despite how large the English Mastiff is they don’t require any more exercise than regular size dogs. In fact, because of their large form, their bones need to fully develop before they are actually introduced to a routine exercise schedule. Excessive exercise before their bones and joints are developed can stunt and hinder their growth.

    Training them takes patience.

The English Mastiff is an intelligent but stubborn and sensitive dog! Because of the former, it will take time and patience to train them. Because of the latter, they respond very well to positive and firm training. They love to please their owners, so keep the commands simple and straightforward.

    Mastiffs are sweet.

We touched on this earlier. The English Mastiff is large and lovable. They are incredibly gentle and calm, especially with their families. They can live in families with children, as well. They are protective and make excellent guard dogs, but don’t expect them to actually chase or attack someone. They may keep an intruder held down physically until human help arrives, but that’s about it.

    Mastiffs have large litters!

Because the English Mastiff is so large, they consequently have large litters. A typical litter produces approximately 10-12 puppies, and that’s a lot! The Mastiff breed is the only dog breed that has ever produced the highest number of puppies in a single litter. This record goes to an English Mastiff in England who gave birth to 24 puppies, of which 20 survived past the first week!

    Their care can be costly.

As with most large dogs, it will be more expensive to take care of them. They eat a lot! No really, they eat 6 to 8 cups of dry food a day. Because they need to be fed the best and highest quality of food, that can really add up. You also have to factor in their vet bills, toys, etc. Taking proper care of them requires proper financial planning; however, they are worth every penny!
