  • Have No Fear, Petland is on Paw Patrol this Year!

There’s so much that goes into taking care of a puppy, but Petland is here to make things simple!

So, you’ve finally decided to buy a dog from Petland and your puppy is the newest member of your family.  For sure you did your research and purchased food, a crate, puppy pillows, toys and the like, but there are some things that you’ll inevitably forget and that’s okay! Here at Petland, we want to cover all of the bases for caring for your puppy.  One of the cutest, but often overlooked, body parts of puppies are their paws!

Here are 5 ways to protect dog paws:

    1.        Winter is here!

Your puppy’s paws may be affected by the cold weather, causing painful paws. Try moisturizing your puppy’s paws regularly for relief. Take this time to pamper your puppy! They’ll enjoy it and your bond will be deepened. With icy and snowy grounds, home owners are sprinkling various melting products. Use wet wipes to remove the chemicals your pup came in contact with. For your personal usage, purchase “pet friendly” ice melting products. They are safe to use around your puppy, however, still be sure to monitor the contact. Lastly, purchase some winter booties for your pup.  It will take them some time to get used to walking in them, and you’ll surely be entertained, but they’ll protect your dog’s paws greatly.

    2.        Summer care is necessary, too.

For similar reasons as winter care, you will want to purchase summer booties to protect their paws from hot grounds.  Moisturizing your pup’s paws aids greatly in their protection.  Use the grass or a shaded area as much as possible on particularly hotter days.  Use wipes to cool and cleanse them.

    3.        Nails should be kept trimmed.

It is so important to keep your dog’s nails trimmed. Long nails can cause injuries and discomfort. You can purchase clippers at Petland or have it done professionally. It’s a personal choice.  Some people take their pets to a professional, because they don’t feel comfortable doing it themselves.  This is especially true for with dogs with dark nails or dewclaws.  The quick of the nail is nearly invisible and if cut can lead to bleeding.  There are clippers especially made to detect the quick, allowing for a pain free and accurate cut.

    4.        Hair should be neatly groomed.

By keeping the paw hair neatly groomed, it can prevent matting and tangling. The long paw hairs can get caught in the nails causing pain. Long hair also holds more germs that even wipes can’t clean.  In between grooming appointments, use small scissors to keep the areas short and sweet and neat!

    5.        Stay alert.

Keep your eyes open for where you’re walking.  Be aware of large twigs, fallen branches, or broken glass.  There’s a myriad of things on the ground that can be harmful to your dog’s paws.  We can prevent injury by staying alert of your dog’s surroundings.

  • Small Dogs Can Be Kid-Friendly Too, This is Our List of Top Puppy Breeds

Good Afternoon, fellow animal lovers! Today, we want to talk dive a little bit deeper in talking about which small breeds of dogs fit well with families that have small children!

With so many breeds out there to choose from, it can be a hard decision to make. But don’t worry, Petland is experienced with matching the right puppy with the right family! The only hard decision you’ll be making now is which of these pint-sized kid friendly dog breeds you’ll want to take home.

    Pug

Whether it’s lounging inside or being active outside, the Pug is a perfect match for families with young children. Even though they are considered a small breed, they are very hearty and can take some rough love! Because of their flat faces, they don’t do well in extreme temperatures, but as good apartment dogs, they won’t go crazy if inside for long periods of time.

    Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Sweet and loving to a fault, the Cavalier is the quintessential family dog. Even if they are being tugged on or trod on, this breed will always stand by its people! The Cavalier tends to not be a super active dog, so keep that in mind if your children are always on the go. Think more dress up and tea party time! Want to know more? We recently did a blog about the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

    Miniature Poodle

The Poodle is an excellent choice for children or family members with allergies. As a hypoallergenic breed, the Poodle has hair as opposed to fur, severely cutting down on its dander and making it nearly non-shedding in comparison to other animals. However, because the hair is constantly growing, you will have to have the dog grooming periodically.

    Beagle

Not many people haven’t heard of this breed! The Beagle has been a popular choice for families for many years because of its ability to be a loyal companion. Technically a small to medium-sized pooch, the Beagle is the largest on our list today. They are an especially great breed for several small children or kids that are very active, as the Beagle loves to run and play!

    Boston Terrier

This playful breed is one of our favorites to match with families! The Boston is loving, easy-to-train and does well with small children and other pets. As another hearty breed, the Boston can take some accidental licks and keep on ticking! They also tend to be quieter than some other small breeds. Same goes for the flat faced Boston as the Pug, limit outdoor time when the weather is too hot or cold, as it can make it harder for the Boston to breathe.

As always, we encourage you to stick to a training protocol and supervise your new pup around the family. Even if they are kid friendly dog breeds, it is also very important that you teach your children to properly handle your new four-legged family member. Our Pet Counselors are always here to help make the transition to pet owner an easy one!

  • The Maltese – Check Out These Fun Facts about this Aristocratic Breed!

Greetings, ladies and gentleman, and welcome to a segment of our breed blogs! Please kindly don your crowns and jewels as we talk about the most aristocratic and richest breed of dog in all the land, the incomparable Maltese! Now, you may think that the Maltese is just a fluffy lap dog, which is actually mostly true, but they also have a long and fabled past. Read along with our blog to find out more about this curious little breed. Petland always has Maltese puppies for sale, just check out our available puppies page!

    The Maltese is how old??

Even though the Maltese is a fairly well-known breed, people are often surprised at how long ago their origins can be traced. As one of the oldest breeds still in existence, The Maltese is said to date back over 2800 years and have graced the laps of Ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians. Even their very coats were especially bred and prized by Romans, as the color white was considered sacred. Ancient Egyptians built elaborate tombs for them. And in Greece, they were often painted on ceramics and in murals to depict their popularity. That’s a lot of love!

    Royalty comes with its perks!

The Maltese were the favored dogs of queens and royalty alike, such as Marie Antoinette, Mary Queen of Scots, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria. They were often fed out of golden dishes and wore real diamond collars! That popularity among the rich and famous has continued unto modern times as well. The richest (yes, richest) Maltese in history, named “Trouble”, was bequeathed nearly $12 million by her owner, real estate magnate, Leona Helmsley in 2007! I would definitely call that a perk!

“And though they be but little, they are fierce!”

You may think that because of their diminutive size, the Maltese is not athletic, but you would be incorrect! The Maltese is an excellent jumper and has little fear of gravity, making it prone to grabbing things high up and getting on couches and beds. They are also described as being loving and gentle, as well as fearless and loyal to their owners. Although, this makes them a little wary of strangers, so introducing new people can be a slow process.

    That coat, tho.

Maltese are technically non-shedding or hypoallergenic, which is sometimes confusing to people. They don’t have fur like other dogs, they have hair, which can still fall out, but is more like humans losing hair throughout the day. Because of that hair, they don’t carry dander like other dogs, which is what people tend to be allergic to when it comes to man’s best friend. However, on the flip side, their hair grows continuously and requires daily brushing to prevent mats and monthly haircuts to keep their hair short.

Well, we hope this breed blog was as interesting to you as is was to us!

Huskies have evolved over the years from an outdoor dog roaming across the frozen tundra to a stay-at-home family pet.

  • Sheltie Puppies for Sale, Why You Need One of these Precious Pups!

Sheltie puppies for sale are some of the sweetest and most beautiful around and Petland has them!

The small, active Shetland Sheepdog, affectionately nicknamed the Sheltie, was once a Scottish farmer’s best friend: sounding the alarm when anyone approached the property, barking at birds and other animals to shoo them from the garden, and later, with crosses to Scottish herding dogs, keeping the sheep flocks in line. While at first glance they look like a smaller version of the Collie, the two are distinctly different breeds. Now, the Sheltie puppies for sale are mostly a family pet and very popular ones to boot!

Read on for more interesting facts about the Shetland Sheepdog:

    • The Shetland Sheepdog stands between 13 and 16 inches tall at the shoulder, but it’s not unusual for them to be over- or undersize. A typical Sheltie weighs about 22 pounds, but a large one can weigh as much as 35 or 40 pounds. They have an average lifespan of 12-15 years.
    • Shelties are loving companions for all members of the family, including the kids, but they can be reserved or even shy around strangers. Because of their protective nature, they’re quick to bark if they sense that anything’s amiss in their territory.
    • Because of their intelligence, willingness to please, and athletic ability, Shelties excel at performance events. However, they have a drive to be active and they need several walks and playtime daily to be happy.
    • They can do well in many different environments, as long as they can be near their owners and have ample playtime.
    • While Shelties are very smart, you need to have patience while training them. Make training fun, with lots of affectionate pats and treats. Treats are always the best way to your pup’s heart!

Even though Shelties are a popular breed, they can be hard to find! That’s where Petland comes in! We buy from only the most caring, reputable breeders and we stand behind our puppies 100%. • Our Basset Hound Puppies Will Melt Your Heart!

Those sad eyes, wrinkly faces and trip-over worthy ears, our Basset hound puppies will be love at first sight!

The Basset hound is thought to come from as far back as the 1500s when the French were using low slung, heavy-bodied hounds to trail rabbits. The word “bas” is French for “low” befitting the Basset hound’s signature stature. For hunters, the Basset was the ideal companion as its slow and steady gait was easy to trail after. In the United States, the Basset quickly moved on from hunting dog to beloved family pet. Familiarized to the public by cartoons, commercials and mascots, the Basset remains a very popular large breed dog to this day. This laid-back breed is easily one of the most recognizable in the dog world, but what else do you know about Basset? Don’t worry, that’s where we come in! Read on for interesting facts about the Basset hound. Petland often has Basset hound puppies for sale, check them out on our available puppies page!

This hound dog will steal your heart, check out more on their breed and personality:

    • Bassets are heavy-boned dogs with a thick body on short, stubby legs. Because they are a large breed, Bassets are slow maturing dogs, often not reaching full size until two years old. They have an average weight of 40-80lbs!
    • The Basset has a short, shiny coat that comes in typical hound colors: red and white and tri-color, with ticking being fairly common. They don’t require much grooming and are considered average to heavy shedders.
    • The Basset hound is a friendly, outgoing breed. Originally used hunting with a pack, they tend to be good with other dogs and other pets. Bassets are people oriented and get along well with children.
    • Because they are hound dogs, they have that deep baying bark typical of the category. They do better having a bigger environment and yard, even though they have minimal exercise requirements, as they like to wander scenting around.
    •  Bassets need patience and a firm hand with training. They have a keen mind, but get distracted easily.

Think you’ve got what it takes to be a Basset hound owner? We think so too! Give us a call today to learn more about the Basset hound puppies in our store!
