    Petland In the Community

Petland stores pride themselves on giving back to the community that has given so much to us in terms of patronage and trust. It is mainly for this reason that we run several charity programs and events to touch the lives of several people/pets across different states where our stores are located. Here are details of some of the different programs that we are involved in:

Safari Stan’s Children’s Charities by Petland

This charity program was officially launched for children in 1994, and we currently have two organizations. For the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America, since 1998, Petland has helped bring over 850 pet-related wishes. Likewise, for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Petland has collected over $1.2 million for thirteen years and counting!

    Pet Therapy at Petland

This program benefits young children and the elderly in our communities. Petland occasionally takes some of our pets on visits to schools and nursing homes for some animal and human bonding experience. This has been proven to be an incredible experience for people!

    Pets in the Classroom

This is a program run by the Pet Care Trust, with Petland as an active member. This program seeks to generate funds to enable teachers to purchase pets and pet-related supplies for their classrooms. The aim of this is to promote a healthy relationship between kids and their pets if/when they have one.

    Adopt A Pet

Petland takes in homeless pets from various sources such as pet rescue groups, local animal shelters, or people with more pets than they can properly take care of. Petland counselors work hand-in-hand with the welfare groups to find satisfactory homes for these pets.

    Other activities include:

    • Providing funds and feeding for several therapy dogs, service dogs, and k9 units.
    • Providng therap and companion dogs for incapacitated veterans
    • Providing extra protection for all their pets through technology

Now, this is our little way of giving back, and we would definitely be looking to do even more!

  • A New Puppy For The New Year

Yay! It’s the new year! Many people have their new year resolutions outlined and are already putting them into effect. For some, one of these resolutions is to get a new fur baby at the beginning of the year. Just like any other parenting, puppy parenting can be somewhat overwhelming but fun overall. There are a lot of things for both of you to learn and you have to get started on your part before bringing your cuddly fur baby home.

Here are a few things to note when getting a new puppy:

    Your Schedule
Puppies are fun to be with however, they require a lot of care and attention in their first few months. You’ll have to feed Max two to three times daily. In addition, you would have to take him on walks and get him socialized later on. You have to factor all of these into your schedule. This phase may be tasking, but it’s definitely rewarding.

    Bonding Time
The first few months of Max’s life are the perfect time to bond with him and get to know him. There’s a lot that you can learn about him just by spending time with him. You can learn about your playful puppy’s personality, temperament, tastes, and intelligence. Everyone loves puppy breath and you’ll definitely be getting a lot of that in your face along with licks of gratitude.

    Training
It is essential to start training your dog early. At this young age, Max is ready to learn. All he’s waiting for is for you to work with him as soon as you can. Training provides tremendous benefits to continued good behavior both inside your home and in public. You can teach your Max basic obedience and then step up to potty training, chew training, and crate training.

  • Best Gifts To Buy Your Dog this Christmas

Christmas is Santa season and your dog shouldn’t be left out. This is a perfect time to get your fur baby some practical gifts. They don’t necessarily have to be expensive. Just items that would be of great use in the long-term. So, here are some ideas to help you along:

    Toys!
Squeaker toys, outside toys, stuffless toys, name it. This should top your list of gift ideas for Buddy. Even if he’s got a favorite, adding another to the collection only makes it better. After all, the more, the merrier.

    A New Bowl
You could decide to gift Buddy with a brand new bowl for his chow. This is definitely going to be a very important one for him because, let’s face it, pups are humongous food lovers. Similarly, you could put in some more thought to personalize it by customizing the bowl with his name or perhaps, a cute picture of him.

    A New Collar and Leash
If his previous collar and leash were wearing out, Christmas is a perfect time to get Buddy a new leash and collar. This is a practical purchase choice, wouldn’t break the bank, and he would definitely love his new collar a whole lot.

    A Bed
What better way to make Buddy’s Christmas than to invest in some comfort item for him. And of all items available, a new bed definitely sounds like an awesome idea. You could get a softer and bigger bed to serve as your fur baby’s new kingdom. For the most part, these items are pretty inexpensive and would not break the bank. However, going for designer brand products is a pretty good idea too. Provided they are practical and durable, you’re good to go!

  • This is Why You Need a Goldendoodle

A new dog breed is fast becoming a favorite amongst American families and for a range of reasons. At first sight, a Goldendoodle, which is a cross between a golden retriever and a poodle, captures your heart with their adorable appearance.

However, that isn’t all there is to a Goldendoodle. Here are some other essential highlights that would make you fall in love with this furry baby breed:
    Smart & Trainable
Goldendoodles are extremely smart and take to command easily. They are also great at picking up tricks easily, and bring to life the old expression, “You can teach old doodles new tricks.”

    Minimal Upkeep
This breed doesn’t demand a lot in terms of attention. In addition, you can opt for your preferred size; large, medium, or tiny. And while they require minimal attention, they still deserve to get all your love.

    Great With Kids
Goldendoodles make for the perfect family pet. They are great with babies, toddlers, and adolescents. They are an explicitly trustworthy companion. They also have lots of energy, and would definitely match up to the playful antics of kids.

    Low Shedding
This breed is especially noteworthy because of the fact that they barely shed. Compared to the Golden retriever, you would be doing a lot less cleaning. They are also hypoallergenic, implying that they have less allergens, which is great for people with allergies.

    Top Hybrid
The Goldendoodle is a cross of two top breeds; the golden retriever and the poodle, and this endows them with lots of extra cuteness. Also, studies have shown that they are at a lower risk of exhibiting disorders prevalent in their parent breeds. This implies that their genetic health is at a much better level.

Given all of these qualities, it’s no surprise that this breed is fast winning hearts and turning heads.

  • Is Your House Puppy Proof For The Holidays?

Christmas is the time to deck the halls with boughs of holly. But as a new puppy owner, should you? In getting your house ready for the holidays, you want to make sure that you don’t cause any hazard to your new puppy. You don’t want Rex getting hurt because of some decorations. Consider these safety tips to puppy proof your house during the holidays:

Keep Unsafe Food Out of Reach
You probably know that chocolates are a no-go. But those are not the only Christmas foods that are harmful to your puppies. Some of the foods to avoid include:

    • Coconut
    • Garlic
    • Onions
    • Salty snacks
    • Grapes
    • Raisins
    • Citrus

Any of these foods can result in weakness, dehydration, vomiting, tremors, upset stomach, and in worst cases, kidney failure.
Restrict Access To the Christmas Tree
To keep your pup from toppling over the Christmas tree and toying with your favorite ornaments, restrict access to the tree. You can consider weighing it down or tying it. Another option is putting the tree in a puppy playpen or exercise pen.
    Keep Chords Out of Reach
Electrical cords can pose a huge risk to your puppy. Make sure you keep them out of reach.
You can run them on the ground and cover them up with plastic liners. You can keep the cords up high, so that it’s out of reach. Another easy option is to opt for decorations that are battery-operated decorations. That way, you don’t have any chords running around.
Keep Wrapping Materials Off the Floor
What’s Christmas without gift wrapping? When wrapping gifts, ensure your wrapping materials are away from your pup. Once you’re done wrapping, make sure all your materials are off the floor.
    Create a Safe Space
During the holidays, you’ll most likely get more visitors, relatives, and friends in your home. This can cause stress to your pup. To prevent this, create a safe space for your puppy where he can relax such as a comfy crate set up.

Considering his distinct and irresistible looks, it’s no surprise that a lot of people love the Frenchie. But that’s just one of the several other qualities that makes the Frenchie the perfect puppy to get:
    Great Companion Dog

He sleeps an average of 18 hours a day as a puppy and 13 hours a day as an adult.
    Good Watchdog
The French Bulldog makes all sorts of noises like grunting and snoring but he is not a big barker. Despite this, he makes a surprisingly good watchdog. He’ll bark when someone’s at the door or around strangers. He can be a bit territorial.

He has a reputation for being pretty stubborn but your Frenchie is a people pleaser. So be rest assured that he’s easy to train with the right motivation.
Frenchies have a lot of love to give and make for one of the best furry companions you can get.

  • Introducing Your Pet to Strangers

As a pet parent, if you’re going to be having guests in the house with your pet present, then this is an essential step.

Ideally, the socialization process should begin as soon as your pup comes home. Invite friends and family over, and have them interact with your pup so that he gets used to the feel of other people outside of yourself.

Pups have different personalities and would naturally react differently when meeting strangers for the first time. So, whether the meeting is outdoors or indoors, here are 5 steps to help you ace pet-human introductions:

    1. Stay On Top of the Entire Exchange

This starts right from when the doorbell rings. Keep your dog on a leash, and correct unpleasant behavior like barking or charging at the door using a firm but calm tone.

Once your guest enters, ensure that they are interacting with you and ignoring your pup. This strange but correct action allows your pet to understand that they don’t pose a threat, and this should help him relax.

Next, allow your dog to get a few sniffs of your guest, and he should be more relaxed afterward.

    1. Keep Intros Short Initially

This especially applies when your pet gets easily excited. Watch his behavior, if you note any buildup of aggression or agitation, slow the process down.

You may need to keep the leash on for the entire duration of the visit, this would help you keep control of the situation.

Furthermore, a calm tone and lots of loving physical contact should help.

    1. Reward Good Behavior

If your pup remains calm when he hears a knock instead of racing to the door, this is behavior that should be rewarded.

You could allow your visitor to do the honors even, this would help him relax.

Furthermore, it would reinforce the message that remaining calm is a pathway to treatsville. Even from visitors!

    1. Employ Commands

If your pet starts to appear startled, use any of the basic commands, “Sit”, “Stay”, “Off” and “Lie Down” which are already in his vocabulary.

Similarly, you should use a calming tone when doing this. It would serve to take away the building fear. This also indicates that your attention is still on him even with strangers around.

Ensure that your guest’s manner is calming as well. No eye contact with your pet for the first minute or two a slow approach is one of the fundamentals.

    1. Provide Safe Grounds

A secure, calming space where your pup can retire to when he’s spooked is pretty essential. You want him to retreat and not attack or face his fears if he’s feeling threatened.

Apart from a crate, using a doggy gate is a good idea as well. The gate serves as a separation between your pup and your guest, and he can observe from a safe distance.

Since he’s in a safe space, he can then evaluate the situation more calmly. And over time, you should be able to do introductions without any hassle.

  • Autumn Is Definitely Best Season For Fur Baby Photos

Shortly after that, the leaves begin to fall on the ground and everyone’s lawn is covered in a beautiful array of autumn colors.
